Dear Families,
The school year definitely has a rhythm to it. We begin with beautiful weather and healthy anticipation for all that a new academic year will bring. Early on, we’re buoyed by frequent breaks and joyful holidays.
And then we return from winter break to—whomp whomp—darker days, colder nights, less-than-great air quality, and a long stretch with far fewer holidays or breaks.
January in Utah requires intention. Teachers engage in careful planning, we all work to uphold steady routines, and to harness a little magic, we lean into good old-fashioned team spirit ("hello, attendance challenge").
Thank you for partnering with us as we soldier through this part of the year together and keep the focus on student learning and joy!
Warmly,
Dr. Pettersson

We appreciate all that you are doing to get your students here at school on-time and ready to learn! Let's beat the Bonneville Bobcats again this week - week 4 of the challenge!
This week, we leveled up and challenged each classroom to meet the goal of 95% or better attendance. And the classes listed above met that challenge!
Last week's winning classes spanned grades 1 through 6! Each of those classes will get a special surprise this week!
I cannot wait to share Principal Holman and her staff's Ka-Kaw with all of you!!!
*If you think your child should stay home due to illness, that is the absolutely right decision.

I want to start by thanking all of our amazing parent volunteers over the last two weeks as have worked on completing our community service project for Primary Children's Hospital. What a great turnout, discussion, and moment for building connections in our community. Another amazing event this week was the STEAM fair! Hats off to the very talented Mrs. Bonner who out did herself once again with the help of our volunteers! I was absolutely blown away by the quality of the research, experiments, and presentations from all of the students. Here is a look at what we’ll be working on in the lower grades for SEL:
-
Kindergarten – Emogers #2 & #3 (Count to 10 & Breathe 5 Times): Identify how we can use the emotional management strategies “count to 10” and “breathe 5 times”.
-
1st Grade – Emoger #4 – Walk Away Quietly: Identify how we can use the emotional management strategy: Walk Away Quietly.
-
2nd Grade – Nicely Nicely: Explain why it's important to express our appreciation to
- others. Express appreciation to someone important to us. Define appreciation.

Dear families & teachers:
Thank you for being so supportive of our STEAM Fair. It takes all of us to get it done! The projects this year were the best that I have seen in the last 10 years that I have been at IHE. The judges agreed with me, BEST-YEAR-EVER!
|
These kids are thoughtful, creative, methodical, mathematical, well spoken, and so fun! I am so proud of them!
Below is a list of the projects that are progressing to the District Fair.
A heartfelt thank you for making this experience possible!
Ms. Bonner

Each year, the Utah State Board of Education administers RISE (end-of-level assessments) to elementary students in grades 3–6. These results are one of many data points our teachers use to inform instruction, providing valuable insight into student growth from year to year and helping us gauge how our school performs in comparison to the roughly 650 elementary schools across Utah.
The highlights below include our ranking statewide and within SLC School District in tested subjects. For example, in English our school was #1 in the state and district for grades 3, 5, and 6.

Our 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students will participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee on Friday, February 20th.

Dear families:
During the month of January, students will use their SEL time with Counselor Chris to cut and tie fleece blankets as a service project. The completed blankets will be donated to Primary Children’s Hospital. We would love volunteers to come and help as students tie the quilts.
Check out the Sign-Up Link if you are able to help out. Please note that 3-6th grade will be participating in their "specials" groups, so if you would like to help with your child's group, please check with them about which group they are in.
Have a great week!

The window for Early Open Enrollment Applications for the 2026-2027 school year is now open!
In Utah, families have a choice in where their students attend school. Utah law allows families and their students to apply to attend a school even if it is outside of their neighborhood. If you have friends or family members who may be interested in attending Indian Hills but do not live within our boundaries, please feel free to share the information below:
Apply Here:
2025–2026 Open Enrollment Timeline

SLC School District Open Enrollment Priorities
Applications are reviewed and accepted according to the following priority order:
- The student has a sibling currently attending the requested school
- The student has a parent who is a district employee
- The student is a SLCSD resident
- The student resides outside the SLCSD boundaries
Students will be accepted into schools with available space according to their assigned priority. If multiple students share the same priority, a lottery will be used to determine the order of acceptance.

It takes all of us to keep students safe, especially in cold weather with icy road conditions. Last week, many adults failed to follow our parking lot rules. Please note the following:
-
No U-turns are permitted on school property. All traffic must turn right before reaching the bike lockers.
-
The faculty parking access road (St Marys Drive) on the north side of the building is for staff only—please do not use this road if you are not a faculty member.
Additional reminders:
- Our campus is landlocked, with one road in and out of the parking lot.
- This road is relatively steep and can be difficult to navigate in snowy or icy conditions.
- If your vehicle does not have all-wheel drive, please consider dropping off and picking up your student(s) on Wasatch Blvd. or at one of the nearby access paths (Roxbury, Nottingham, or Beacon).

If you have feeback for us, please share it.
This goes directly to Dr. Pettersson, only. You can choose to have her share it with others or keep it confidential.
